funny things I've heard today

"The woman playing my sister has man eyebrows" - David, referring to a film he's shooting today.
"Mermaids are half whale, half person" - Aliyah while playing in the bathtub, talking out some made up storyline involving a mermaid.

my little nudist

Shayel (almost 8) lamented cultural taboos today while walking home from school - mom, why can't girls take their shirts off? I told her that groups of people who live together have to make choices that apply to everyone, it's part of what helps us get along, and sometimes those things are laws but sometimes they're just what we expect of each other. And for lots of reasons, we, in this country, decided that women can't go without shirts, or at least bathing suits. But in other places, it's different. In some place you can go naked all the time and no one cares, in some places you can be topless but have to wear long skirts. She said "that's dumb" to the whole lesson. I said "I agree but let's put it this way, if you go without a shirt, you will get in trouble and when you're a little older you'll get in trouble with the police". She slumped down and said "fiiiine" and as soon as we got home she stripped down to her underwear - - ah the difficult lessons of life

"Light is the perfection of art" (Shayel, age 7)

our whole family was coloring earlier tonight and Shayel said this completely out of the blue. We all kind of just sat there stunned.

my kids tend to reveal a little too much...

We were standing in line at the post office the other day and Aliyah asked "Mom, do you ever wear panties? How about with pants?" Now, since I'm posting this on a public blog I'm obviously not shy about much of anything but there was something a little awkward about that revelation considering the creepy looking man right behind me holding the suspicious looking package who smiled a very creepy smile when he heard that little tidbit about my unmentionables (or lack of).

why?...

Aliyah has been asking a lot of why questions lately. This morning it was "mom, why are there windows?" I'm one of those annoying moms who replies with "why do YOU think there are windows?" She came up with all the reasons I would have given her. When I'm in a good mom frame of mind and allow myself to be present in those moments (instead of getting annoyed at the 300th why question in the span of 20 minutes), they breed precious memories.

Shayel about equestrian events "I don't think I'd like cross country, no one can see you. Oh, and you also fall a lot...

...I just want to do jumping and dressage." (the funny part was the pause between not being seen and falling...as if falling was really just an afterthought and she was more concerned about people not being able to see her lol)

those tricky 'r's

Aliyah is almost incapable of using the 'r' sound. Because of this, Little Bear and Little Bill (2 of her fav. tv shows) sound exactly the same. So we worked out a code - she growls when she says Little Bear. LOL

It makes me chuckle listening to her sometimes.
